There is an intense battle unfolding between Trumpworld and Ron DeSantis’ camp regarding right-wing pinfluencers. A recent article published by Breitbart has caused a stir within American conservative circles. The article reveals that Pedro Gonzalez, a conservative writer and pinfluencer who previously supported Trump but now backs DeSantis, allegedly sent antisemitic and racist messages in 2019 and 2020.

The messages, shared in a group chat called “Right-Wing Death Squad” and sent to a single member of that group, contained disturbing content. Quotes from the messages include derogatory remarks about non-whites and offensive references to prominent individuals like Candace Owens and Ben Shapiro.

Gonzalez, who serves as the politics editor of Chronicles and contributes to Newsweek, acknowledged that the messages were his but stated that the article was a smear piece from the Trump camp. He argued that his criticism of Trump since distancing himself from the former president has made him a target for Trump pinfluencers.

Earlier this year, DeSantis began recruiting former high-profile Trump pinfluencers and supporters to promote him on social media and in the media. Gonzalez has been actively advocating for the Florida governor, using his platform to highlight differences between DeSantis and Trump.

DeSantis’ camp didn’t publicly address the revelations about Gonzalez’s messages, but the Never Back Down PAC, which supports DeSantis, condemned the content as inexcusable. Christina Pushaw, a spokesperson for DeSantis’ campaign, liked a tweet characterising the growing battle between Trump and DeSantis as “nasty,” specifically pointing out the behavior of Trump’s surrogates.

Chronicles, the publication where Gonzalez serves as politics editor, has not made any public statements about the Breitbart article. However, it’s worth noting that the magazine defended Gonzalez last year when he faced accusations of antisemitism.

Despite the controversy, Gonzalez expressed gratitude for the support he has received, even from some Trump supporters. Notably, Donald Trump Jr. retweeted the Breitbart story multiple times on Tuesday night, indicating his involvement in the ongoing discourse.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The battle between Trump pinfluencers and DeSantis pinfluencers signifies a competition to shape the landscape for the 2024 Presidential candidacy. This clash highlights the significant political power wielded by pinfluencers in today’s digital age. Both camps are vying to have their preferred candidate, either Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis, chosen as the frontrunner for the next presidential race. As these pinfluencers leverage their platforms to sway public opinion and rally support, their actions underscore the growing influence and impact of pinfluencers in the realm of politics.

THE FUTURE

Within the next 5-10 years, pinfluencers are poised to play an increasingly prominent role in the selection of future presidents and prime ministers. As social media platforms continue to grow in reach and influence, individuals with substantial online followings hold the power to shape public opinion, mobilise support, and influence voting behaviour on a massive scale. The ability of pinfluencers to connect directly with their audiences, build trust, and drive engagement provides them with a unique platform for influence. With the younger generations, particularly millennials and Gen Z, placing greater trust in digital content creators and social media personalities, the potential for pinfluencers to sway political outcomes will only continue to grow. As a result, political campaigns and candidates will increasingly rely on strategic partnerships and endorsements from influential figures to secure electoral success in the future.

People will reject them, laugh at them, sneer at them, and even undermine them, but one thing they cannot do, is ignore them. Similar to the computer geeks during the 90’s, pinfluencers are the future.
